Love and jealousy in Handel's finest arias and duets, magnified by Sandrine Piau's timbre and Christophe Dumaux's virtuosity
Sandrine Piau, Christophe Dumaux, Emmanuelle Haïm and his Concert d’Astrée conjure up the Handelian heroes from Rinaldo, Poro, Tamerlano, Alcina and Ottone, all works in which the lovers question their fidelity, consuming passion, jealousy and other deceptions. The inconsolable sorrow of an aria di speranza, the tender complaint of a lamento, love duets... the subtlety with which Handel translates the infinite spectrum of emotions into music always wins the listener's heart. In this programme, the two soloists deliver a very convincing performance of the roles sung by the leading singers of the time: the sopranos Anna Maria Strada del Pò and Francesca Cuzzoni, and the castrati Giovanni Carestini and Francesco Bernardi. Handel's favourites brought him triumph and his works are still a staple three centuries later.
