From classical to jazz, musicians render Barbara's greatest melodies in a purely orchestral programme
Almost 20 years ago, the world lost Barbara: a unique blend of strength and fragility, an unmistakeable voice and a distinctively intense tone. There can be no doubt that her very rich songs, scattered with captivating melodies, deserve to be played like concert pieces. Bruno Fontaine, an admirer of the "longue dame brune" since childhood, has arranged some of Barbara's finest songs for symphony orchestra. With the Orchestre National d'Ile-de-France and four magnificent soloists, he revisits this deeply personal corpus in which each song is like a fresh page. The variety of orchestral timbres lends a new resonance to these gems of unfathomable melancholy or impertinent whimsy.
