Anne Gastinel cello

The cello was Haydn's favourite instrument and his celebrated D major concerto, performed here by Anne Gastinel, highlights its beauty

"A musician can only move others if he is moved himself." This fine quotation is attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach's second son, a musician at the court of Frederick II of Prussia. Carl Philipp Emanuel was one of the most influential figures during the reign of this "enlightened despot" and his huge body of work, which touched on every musical genre, was admired by Haydn and Mozart. His work represents an essential link between the Classical style and pre-Romanticism. The same can be said of Haydn, who went on to achieve even greater renown. The capricious nature of his concertos and symphonies is a hallmark, as is musical humour, in which Haydn excelled.
