Rhythm, swing and a breath of youth with the extraordinary piano virtuoso Khatia Buniatishvili
Second concert this season for the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra with an invitation to swing from the pavements of Broadway to those of Beverley Hills. The concert begins with a bang with two "hits": Bernstein's On the Waterfront and Gerschwin's Rhapsody in Blue, followed by the allegory of the times of day evoked by Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, the musician's last work, composed when he was settled in California. From her home city Tbilissi to Vienna, where she continued her musical studies, as in every other world city where she performs, Khatia Buniatishvili is a one-of-a-kind pianist in her generation. She brings melancholy, refinement and the most astounding virtuosity... not to mention the child-like softness of her face and that wonderful, irresistible laugh.
